Project update: Investing in places and spaces with County Durham UK Shared Prosperity Funding
In early 2025 we celebrated as multiple County Durham Community Infrastructure projects were signed off and completed.
Hamsterley and Low Westwood Community Centre had upgrades to their building.
Over 20 community projects were supported
Rural Design Centre had worked with communities across County Durham to identify their priorities for UK Shared Prosperity Funding and investment.
Working with Durham County Council, over 20 different community infrastructure capital projects were across the line.
From kitchens to car parks, gardens to saving carbon
Community halls, hubs and buildings were rebuilt and remodelled, made more accessible with stairlifts, made safer with new fire doors and alarm systems, while others became comfortable and sustainable with insulation, solar panels and batteries.
Redeveloped community buildings, new community gardens, tarmacked carparks, new community kitchens, and energy-efficient warm hubs to save communities money every year.
UK Shared Prosperity Fund matched with volunteer work
Financial investment came from UK Shared Prosperity Fund, this was matched and surpassed by the work and commitment of the workers and volunteers who understand the importance of community infrastructure, spaces that sustain our neighbourhoods and rural community connections.
The importance of supporting community groups
This project demonstrates the importance of additional capacity and practical support to community groups and their volunteers managing capital spend projects.
